Finals Brunch Break

For a nice break from finals and as a way to close up the semester, we are planning on a meeting up for brunch to relax, celebrate, and eat good food! We're currently scheduled for Monday, May 12th at 10am. Location TBA for now. We are open to suggestions and would like to gauge how many people plan to attend so we can make a reservation is necessary, or simply make sure the restaurant has a space to accommodate our group.

So if you are interested in joining us and/or have a suggestion for us to look into for a restaurant, please comment below. We will update on here as soon as we know where this event will be held.

Happy Hour sushi at Sushi JeJu


Hope you all had a great spring break! To kick off the latter half of the Spring semester, we thought it might be nice to come together for happy hour at JeJu Sushi (off College) next Monday, March 31st, starting at 4:30 p.m. In addition to enjoying some tasty fish (or Korean fare, for those of you who are non-sushi eaters), we will be discussing potential upcoming DMGSA activities and events, one of which might be a tour of a local performance apparel company---more details to come!! Before we can move forward, we need to identify specifics regarding the type of information we would like the tour to include. Come prepared with your thoughts and your ideas---and come hungry! :)

Happy Hour Update

DMGSA-ers!

Unfortunately, we realized that JeJu does not do happy hour on Fridays. So we have changed our happy hour venue. Instead, we will be meeting at Restaurant 415 at 5pm. They do not have a designated "happy hour" but they serve some small plates and drinks. They also are flexible and inclusive of various dietary needs, in case anyone needs that :)

Happy hour sushi before fashion show

Hi all,

Just a quick note to provide everyone with additional details about going together to the fashion show---I purchased tickets for several of us yesterday, so if you were still wanting to go and have not yet obtained your ticket (or coordinated with me yesterday), you will need to purchase one on your own. Those of us who bought them together are sitting in seats JJ 114 through 107, if you want to try to pick a seat close to us. Regardless of whether we sit together for the show, let's meet beforehand at JeJu sushi  (off College) happy hour. Happy hour only goes until 6, so we were thinking of meeting at 5 p.m. The sushi is good for the price (I'm kind of a sushi snob, so you can safely take my word for it!!) so please let us know if you will be joining us so we can get a large enough table. We hope to see you there!

Let's go to the fashion show!!

Hi all,

Just wanted to put this out there to see how much interest there would be in attending the fashion show (next Friday night at 7:30 p.m.) together. It sounds like it's going to be a great show, and given the fact that it's put on by our own department, and some of our own members are in the show or have designed pieces that will be shown, we SHOULD go! Just sayin' . :) In any case, below is the information for the show, pulled directly from the website. If we coordinate beforehand (as in, within the next couple of days or so), we can buy tickets at the same time and sit together. I was also thinking that maybe we could go get dinner/appetizers/beverages of some kind either afterwards or before, depending on everyone's schedules. Please reply to this post or text me (Kristi) at 480 392 8381 if you're interested and we'll coordinate the purchase of some tickets.

On March 7, the annual CSU Fashion Show 2014 Rendering Reality will present 25 different collections designed by seniors in the apparel design and production concentration in the Department of Design and Merchandising at Colorado State University. These collections are the highlight of the designers' academic careers, as each piece is designed, constructed, and styled by the students. 

Production for Rendering Reality will be planned and implemented by the Fashion Show Production and Event Planning class, which emphasizes the components and strategies involved in developing a successful fashion show production. 

Times: VIP Cocktail Reception 5:30 p.m. and the Fashion Show 7:30 p.m.

Tickets range in price from $45 to $10. The $45 tickets include a VIP Cocktail Reception before the show. Tickets are available at www.lctix.com

Graduate School Professional Development Series hosted by CSU's Graduate School

Hi all,

I don't know how many of you read through the recent email that came out regarding the graduate school professional series---I went ahead and registered for both parts, one of which took place this morning. (the second part will take place in April and you can still register for it!) Because there were a few responses on the survey that indicated strong interest in more professional development opportunities, I thought I would provide the link (and encouragement!) to register for the second half, and provide some of the "takeaways" or particularly impactful portions (in my opinion) from this morning.

1. The link to register for April's event is directly below. It's a free opportunity and this morning was definitely worthwhile, so I would highly recommend registering.

2. The title of this morning's event was "Striking a Balance in Graduate School" and I can honestly say that each topic was interesting and provided lots of information/insight that I found beneficial. I have shared notes below that I took on one of the sections that detailed 10 tips on how to navigate a professional conference:

Tip 1: Submit an abstract---you'll never be accepted if you don't submit!
Tip 2: Never miss an opportunity to present your work
Tip 3: Set meetings itinerary and logistics ahead of time. (Check your travel registrations, get directions ahead of time etc.)
Tip 4: Find ways to reduce costs. (apply for travel grants, volunteer for the organization, "free food is good food!")
Tip 5: Dress appropriately at all times (know the culture, remember that social events are still professional events)
Tip 6: Attend the technical sessions (attend at least one outside of your area of focus, learn something new! know the dos and don'ts for symposia, if giving a presentation, stay for the entire session, be considerate of other speakers and attendees when choosing entry and exit times)
Tip 7: Go to vendor shows/exhibits (networking opportunities, learning about latest advances, get ideas for new projects, pick up cool free stuff)
Tip 8: Take advantage of professional development opportunities (career fair, workshops on latest fields/techniques)
Tip 9: Get involved with student groups (organizations are interested in the next generation! networking opportunities)
Tip 10: Network, network, network-take advantage of all opportunities!
  • Introduction: get business cards, hang out with your advisor, get others to introduce you
  • Set a goal to have coffee with someone new (it doesn't matter if you drink coffee), someone you want to work with in the future, and bring breathmints! (for the dreaded coffee breath)
  • Use poster sessions to meet new people, support fellow grad students, pay attention to name badges and go out of your way to talk to presenters and other attendees.
  • Continue to build network by attending as many conferences meetings as you can, which will build your confidence and your network.

Rams v. Cowboys Basketball Game

When: Saturday March 7th, 4:00pm
Where: Moby Arena

Hey y'all. So our first event of the semester is attending the CSU Men's basketball game versus our rivals, the Wyoming Cowboys. We have one of two options for tickets. Any of you who are full time students, you get student basketball tickets with your student fees, so this event would be free of (additional) charge! However, if you choose this route, please be aware that this is one of the only Saturday men's basketball games, it's against our rivals, and student seats are available on a first come, first serve basis only on the day of the game. So plan to arrive very early to get seats.

Option two: you can buy reserved seats for only $10 per ticket at the link at the bottom of this post. If you choose this second option, you may want to group up with a few people and pitch cash in to one person who buys them all online. Otherwise there's no guarantee of sitting with each other. We wish we could take on this intermediary role, but unfortunately that's not possible at this time. You may wish to comment below to voice your interest and form groups for either the first or second ticket options. Also, if people buy reserved seating, you might like to leave a comment with your seat number so that others can try to get seats near you (when you follow the link below, click the Wyoming game and choose "Let me pick my seats" to get as close as possible to others).
